Chief Mark E Leonard has been with the Veazie Police Department since 1995 and was hired as the Chief of Police in 2001.  Chief Leonard began his career with the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and has worked for the Old Town Police Department, the Newport Police Department and the Orono Police Department. Prior to being hired as the Chief of Police he was a Lieutenant assigned to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency where he served as an Assistant Supervisor for the Bangor Task Force Office.

Chief Leonard is currently working toward a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice at Husson College and is a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy,  Edmund S Muskie’s Municipal Leadership Program, The Southern Police Institute at the University Of Louisville, Maine’s Community Policing Institute and the FBI’s LEEDS Training.

Chief Leonard has been a member of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association since 2001. During his time with the Association he has served as a member on the Technical Committee and the Awards Committee. He is currently appointed to the State of Maine’s Interoperable Communications Committee and the steering committee for the Community Oriented Policy Strategy (COPS) Grant. In September of 2008 Chief Leonard was elected fourth Vice President of the New England Association of Chiefs of Police.

Locally Chief Leonard is the former Chairperson of the Penobscot County’s Regional Communication’s Center and was instrumental in relocating the Communication Center to their new Facility. He is an Eagle Scout, a Master Mason and a member of the Anah Shrine Temple. In his free time he enjoys fishing and snowmobiling in Aroostook County.
